Sight & Sound

Lifeline

Common? We are connected to the outside world by nothing other than a diminutive gravel air strip and every winged speck in the sky is a welcome one. The faint, distant moan of an engine quickens to a hearty, throbbing laugh on final approach. Nobody in Fort Yukon resents the sound of engines plying overhead – we all know the sound of fifty below, when our skies fall barren and silent and we are left alone in our world.
